Unfortunately during my national race I fell very ill and could not breathe and as such I had to be pulled from the race, the biggest, but the first race I didn’t finish. Later that month, on September 1st, I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (A.L.L.).

I was pretty oblivious to what Leukaemia actually was and when originally told all that came from my mouth was “Bugger!” I just thought it was a fancy name for a bad cold?

Soon after being admitted to hospital me and my family we felt it was a little dismal always mentioning Leukaemia so we renamed it Attitude Love and Laughter, followed but the motto for when the proverbial hit the fan, ‘It’s A.L.L. Good!’ We used these three words to keep things in perspective and to remember what is really important.

I was scheduled for 6 months of chemotherapy in the Mater Private Hospital, which wasn’t the greatest being an athletic teenager. Very quickly though I realised that Leukaemia now was a large part of my life, but not the entirety of it so I wasn’t going to let it rule me, I was going to live! This is where NU Skin came to the rescue!

Amongst the other vial medication/poison I was taking, it was a refreshing feeling to take the Pharmanex products, it was natural, I could feel stronger, focused and help with the nutritional side of things when the hospital food surprisingly lacked anything substantial. I was possibly the worst patient and I respect my doctor for being patient with me. I would take my portable bag of chemo and put it on the treadmill and run 3-6km each day I could escape or would go home to the coast, where I would strap up the permanent tubes hanging from my arm with glad wrap and go surfing. As I said if chemo wanted to break me, it’d have to wait till I’m older, because now I’m going to live my life. I’m doing all this with no white cell and little to no immune system. If I didn’t have that support from the Nu Skin supplements, I feel that chemo may have got the best of me and kept me in hospital for a lot longer. Throughout my initial treatment I took Lifepak, Teegreen, Cortitrol and Flex.

After my treatment at the Mater, I was fortunate enough to have a bone marrow transplant. This was one of the toughest times during my life and I still have trouble describing it with a steady voice. During this time I took Lifepak and Teegreen and during this time the Galvanic Spa had just arrived. Mum wouldn’t stop talking about it, couldn’t get her to shut up about it. At first I had the perception that it was more of a feminine product. That was up until I cut myself during a time when I was neutropenic (lacking any white cells), so the infection travelled from my toe up to my calf. Within a day of using the Galvanic the infection had receded back to the local area of the cut and the pain had been minimised.

In 2009 I finally felt strong enough to give back to those who gave to me and with the suggestion from a friend to run to Longreach for charity. So I organised a 1,200km run from Brisbane to Longreach for the Leukaemia Foundation and AEIOU – Children with Autism. It took 13 friends and a patient mother to run for 13 days down some very long roads. The location Longreach was chosen to show how far rural Queenslanders have to travel for specialist care and to let everyone know that a recovery from these illnesses and disabilities is not a sprint, but a long and arduous marathon. During the organisation phase I spent 6 months working day and night to put it all together along with full time university and running training for the 1,200km jog, I needed something to keep going! So for the organisation period I was taking Reshi max, teagreen, Lifepax and flex to compensate and provide my body with the support it needed and deserved to maintain the study and deal with the learning curve that was the run. During the run it was a different story, running for mates with mates was one of the greatest things to ever happen to any of us. Each morning we would wake with the sunrise and head off in to a very cold winter morning, but before our morning team left to cover the first leg lined up to take their daily supplements, kindly donated by NU Skin, Sydney. We had several products from basic lifepax, cordyceps, flex, teagreen and Gac juice. We were fed immensely well by the rural community, but on the road was a different story. We drank a lot of water, but also had a stable diet of sweets “for carbohydrate loading, of course”, so our diet then was not the greatest. So again Nu Skin products were there to maintain a relatively well supported body and to help us cover the distances we needed to run. Most of the runners on this team were chosen purely because of their relationship ties with myself and since school some had been living quite sedentary lives. These runners had noted an increase of endurance, respiratory efficacy as well as general well being. On the other side of the scale we had amazingly fit runners competing for scholarships to America and a spot in the Commonwealth athletics team. They too also felt an improvement with breathing and especially with joint pain. Another product from NU Skin that became a regular use was the new Galvanic Spa. When climbing the range we had a number of sprains along the way. The Galvanic along with the flex cream and body lotion were used to reduce the swelling and what seemed like an increased time of recovery. At the conclusion of the event we had raised just under $100,000 for the two charities and met some very inspirational people along the way. What got us there was the people who volunteered to run, the smiles we couldn’t remove and the strong bodies thanks to NU Skin.

Currently I am working as a Under Water Ceramics Technician “Dish pig/kitchen hand” four nights a week from 6 to 12PM, studying Exercise Science and Business full time at the University of Queensland and up five times a week a 5:30am for running training. I’m currently training 6-8 times a week for the World Transplant Games in Sweden during June this year. There are a few record books that don’t seem to be correct so I want to try and rewrite them. Again I am working myself to the core trying to do the best at everything I do, sleeping and eating properly is just not enough. This is where I say thank goodness for Vitality! I am focused during lectures, although some professors still do a good job at putting everyone to sleep, excited at 5:30 in the mornings and focused when working in a busy and high class restaurant. It honestly is one of the best products NU Skin has provided yet and when I have to take my post Leukaemia medication I’m more worried when I miss taking my Vitality then I am with those other drugs.

My focus right now are these games in Sweden, it is the closure to my whole Leukaemia experience, it will allow me to forget the one regret, to let me know I’ve achieved what I originally set out to achieve, to be my best. My legs are running fast, I am strong, I am focused and I will break these records. I couldn’t do this though without three things, my family, my friends and my healthy body thanks largely to NU Skin.

I belong to the generation of women who were taught something unfortunate in this regard…….paying attention to yourself, your skin, your health and wellbeing, was the same as being selfish. I now see things differently.

Self care, I now see, is MY RESPONSIBILITY. If I do not pay service to my body, mind and spirit, my vehicle for living, when I abandon this vehicle, it won’t serve me.

Teams of scientists working at Harvard and MIT are tampering with the cellular

There are many reasons a major leaguer can fall into a batting slump: losing his
timing at the plate, bailing out on pitches, thinking too much about dinner after
the game. But the funk that Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Rocco Baldelli fell into
over the past two seasons was on a whole different level.

The dude’s mitochondria were letting him down.

Mitochondria! Yes!

Although Baldelli didn’t realize it when his muscle soreness started or when his injuries began to pile up, his mitochondria were in serious trouble. And they weren’t just causing a slump at the plate, they were causing a slump in his life. Early last year, he couldn’t work out for more than a few minutes without becoming exhausted. He had cramping and other strange sensations in his limbs. By the start of the season last April, things were so bleak that the Rays had put him back on the disabled list.

Fortunately, this is a story with a pretty happy ending. Doctors eventually determined that Baldelli was suffering from mitochondrial myopathy — damage to those power plants.
He began a course of treatment, and by early August the Rays were on the verge of making their first trip to the playoffs. He played well in the regular season, and in the postseason, as TV announcers struggled to pronounce “mitochondria,” he stepped up his performance even more, hitting two postseason home runs and driving in one of the runs that sent the Rays to the World Series.

But don’t let Baldelli’s struggle spook you too much. His disease, however scary, is rare. And even though damaged mitochondria can do bad things to you, as Baldelli will attest, the opposite is also true: Strong, healthy mitochondria can make you strong and healthy now, and maybe for a very, very, very long time.

It’s Friday afternoon and I’ve come to Sinclair’s lab at Harvard Medical School to talk to him not only about the prospects for supercharging our mitochondria, but also about the long-term effects of keeping these cellular power plants humming. Sinclair, a slight, intense man of 39, dismisses the idea of adding centuries to our lives, but he’s more optimistic about the possibility of adding a few decades of, say, competitive softball.

“In the future, people will be thinking, ‘When I’m 80, I’ll still be playing tennis…
and at 90 I’ll still be around to see my great-grand kids graduate from college,’ ” he says.

Mitochondria are tiny, but their effects are large. You can easily see the
difference between an animal whose mitochondria are working perfectly and
one whose mitochondria are worn out.
